Visibility control
Control Location Sharing on WhatsApp (and Stop It)
WhatsApp does not track or broadcast where you are. Your location only leaves your phone when you choose to send it. Manage live shares, stop an active one instantly, and understand exactly what a chat can and cannot see.

WhatsApp shares your position only when you actively choose to
All steps map to official WhatsApp features โ no third-party apps required.
How it works
- 1Open the chat you shared withGo to the conversation where the live location banner appears
- 2Tap the live location messageOpen the shared map to reveal the sharing controls
- 3Tap Stop sharingEnd the live share immediately for that chat or group
- 4Confirm and verify it stoppedThe map freezes and the timer disappears for everyone in the chat
If you do nothing, a live share also ends on its own when its timer (15 min, 1 hour, or 8 hours) expires.
Dead ends and the way forward
Requests we cannot and will not help with โ and the lawful thing to do instead
โ Track another person's WhatsApp location without them knowingWhatsApp never exposes anyone's location unless they actively send it; covert tracking is illegal in most places and no app or service can do it
โ Ask the person to share their live location with you, or use Meta's official family tools for a minor child with their knowledge
โ Use a 'find any number's location' app or websiteThese are scams or malware โ they cannot read WhatsApp and often steal your money or infect your phone
โ Learn how to spot these fake tools
โ See where someone is because you're worried they're spying on youTracking them back is not protection and is unlawful; the real fix is securing your own device
โ Check your own phone for stalkerware
โ Recover a location someone shared and then deletedA stopped or expired live share is gone by design and cannot be retrieved by anyone, including us
โ Ask them to share again if you still need it
We do
- โ Show you how to stop your own live location share
- โ Explain exactly what a chat can and cannot see about your position
- โ Help you tighten your own WhatsApp privacy settings
- โ Guide consent-based location sharing with family via official tools
We never
- โ Track another person's location without their knowledge
- โ Bypass passwords, 2FA, or any account protection
- โ Reveal who 'viewed' you โ WhatsApp has no such feature
- โ Promise to find any phone number's real-time location
You control your own visibility. Nobody โ including WhatsApp โ sees your location unless you deliberately send it.
FAQ
Does WhatsApp share my location without me knowing?
No. WhatsApp does not track or broadcast your location. It only leaves your phone when you tap the attachment icon and choose 'Location' to send a static pin or start a live share. If you never do that, no chat can see where you are.
How do I stop live location that I'm already sharing?
Open the chat where you shared it, tap the live location message to open the map, then tap 'Stop sharing' and confirm. The share ends immediately for everyone in that conversation. It also stops on its own when the timer you set expires.
Can someone track my WhatsApp location without my phone?
No. There is no legitimate way to see a person's WhatsApp location remotely, and apps or sites claiming to do it are scams or malware. If you're worried you're being watched, the real step is checking your own device for spyware, not trying to track anyone back.
If I send a static location pin, can they follow me afterward?
No. A static pin is a one-time snapshot of where you were at that moment. It does not update and does not keep sending your position. Only a live location share updates in real time, and only for as long as its timer runs.
Can I share my location with family safely?
Yes โ WhatsApp's live location is consent-based by design: each person chooses to share and can stop anytime. For a minor child, use official Meta and device family tools with the child's knowledge rather than any covert app.
