What people can — and can't — see about you

Last seen & online
Visible unless you restrict it; controls who sees your activity times.
Profile photo & about
Shown to your chosen audience — everyone, contacts, or nobody.
Status updates
Only the contacts you allow can see your Status posts.
Who viewed your profile
Nobody can see this — WhatsApp never tracks profile views.

Read receipts (blue ticks) are mutual: turn yours off and you also stop seeing others'.

The visibility terms people mix up most — in plain words.

Last seen
The timestamp of when you last opened WhatsApp; controllable per audience.
Online
A live 'active now' label; separate setting from last seen.
Read receipts
Blue ticks that show a message was read; off means it's off both ways.
About
A short text line on your profile, visible to your chosen audience.
Status
Photo/video posts that disappear after 24 hours, shown to allowed contacts.

FAQ

Can someone see who viewed their WhatsApp profile or my visits?
No. WhatsApp does not track or report profile views to anyone. Any app claiming to show 'who viewed you' is inventing data it cannot access — these are scams and often try to steal your login. There is no legitimate way to see this.
What can a stranger who has my number see about me?
Depending on your Privacy settings, a non-contact may see your profile photo, About text, last seen or online status. You control each of these — you can limit them to 'My contacts' or 'Nobody' in Settings > Privacy on your own phone.
Does turning off read receipts hide when I read messages?
Yes — but it's mutual. If you disable blue ticks, your contacts can't see when you've read their messages, and you also can't see when they've read yours. Group chats always show read receipts regardless.
If I hide my last seen, can people still tell I'm active?
Hiding last seen removes the timestamp, but 'online' is a separate setting. To fully reduce activity visibility you adjust both. Our page on hiding last seen and online walks through each control on your own account.
Someone seems to know when I'm online — am I being spied on?
Usually it just means your last seen or online status is visible to them by default — not spyware. Check your Privacy settings first. If you still have real concerns about monitoring, see our guide on whether someone is spying on your WhatsApp.
