Limit WhatsApp for Kids with Family Link & Screen Time

Google Family Link and Apple Screen Time are the device-level controls that actually enforce WhatsApp time limits, block installs and set age thresholds — for your own minor child, out in the open. No covert reading of chats.

See the 5-step setup
Official Google & Apple tools
Family Link and Screen Time are first-party controls, not third-party spyware.
Visible, not covert
Your child sees the limits — nothing is hidden or recorded in secret.
No chat content, ever
These controls manage time and installs, never the words inside messages.
Your own minor child only
Designed for a parent-managed family account, not for monitoring adults.

Setup happens entirely in Google and Apple's own family settings — WhaSpy never asks for your child's password.

Set up device-level WhatsApp limits in 5 steps

1
Pick the platform
Android child → Google Family Link; iPhone/iPad child → Apple Screen Time.
2
Create the child account
Add your child under 13/16 to your Family Group so their device is linked to yours.
3
Set an app time limit
Give WhatsApp a daily minutes cap and a nightly downtime window.
4
Gate installs & age rating
Require your approval for new installs and set the store age threshold to match WhatsApp's 13+ / 16+ minimum.
5
Review together weekly
Open the dashboard with your child, adjust limits and talk about what's working.

Have ready: your Google or Apple ID, your child's device unlocked, and their date of birth for the store age setting.

What these controls can realistically do

Enforce a daily WhatsApp time cap
high
+ Both Family Link and Screen Time count app minutes and lock the app when the cap is hit − A teen who knows your Screen Time passcode can extend or disable limits
Block WhatsApp installs and updates by age
high
+ Store age thresholds and install approval are enforced at the OS level − Sideloaded APKs on Android can slip past store-based age gates
Keep WhatsApp off the phone entirely overnight
medium
+ Downtime schedules disable the app on a timer without deleting chats − Web/desktop WhatsApp on another device is outside these controls
See the content of your child's chats
low
+ Nothing — and that is by design; end-to-end encryption and family tools both stop this − Any app claiming to do it covertly is stalkerware — illegal and unsafe

These are qualitative expectations, not guarantees. Device controls shape access and time; they never reveal message content, and no honest tool can promise total enforcement against a determined, tech-savvy teen. The real safeguard is an open conversation.

FAQ

What's the difference between Family Link/Screen Time and the WhatsApp settings themselves?
Family Link and Screen Time work at the device level — they control when WhatsApp can run, whether it can be installed, and the account's age rating. WhatsApp's own settings control in-app privacy like who sees your child's status or last seen. You want both: the OS tools do the enforcement, the app settings do the privacy. See our WhatsApp-side setup guide for that half.
How young does my child have to be for Family Link or Screen Time to apply?
You can supervise a child of any age under your family account, but WhatsApp itself sets a minimum age (13 in most regions, 16 in parts of Europe). Match the store age threshold to that minimum. For teens near or over the app's age limit, agree the limits together rather than imposing them silently.
Can I read my child's WhatsApp messages through these tools?
No. Neither Family Link nor Screen Time can show message content, and that is intentional — WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted. Any product that claims to secretly show you your child's chats is stalkerware, which is illegal to install on a phone you don't own and unsafe to trust. Talk to your child and use device limits, not covert surveillance.
My teen changed the Screen Time passcode — what now?
That's a common gap. Set a Screen Time passcode that's different from the device unlock code and keep it private. On Android, Family Link's parent approval can't be turned off from the child device. Ultimately these tools reduce access, not human trust — a teen determined to get around them usually can, which is why an open family agreement matters more than the lock.
Does blocking WhatsApp overnight delete my child's chats?
No. A downtime schedule simply makes the app unavailable during set hours; when downtime ends, WhatsApp and all its history are exactly as before. You're pausing access, not wiping data.
